Scientists have studied for generations the bones of the now 'extinct' saber toothed cat. They've come up with many theories as to how they came about.
Evolution played a key role, allowing smaller cats to gain more muscle mass, thick fur, sharper claws and of course those massive teeth. Giving them the ability to defend themselves, and survive the harsh cold in the snows of the earth.
There are even more theories as to how they died out, and why they're gone.

Sabers come from an Etherial plane. Their bodies enfused with magic, they are older than time. Certianly older then the Material plane on which we live.
When humans arrived on earth, the big cats were curious. How would these weak creatures survive the brutal winters and dangerous predators?
The sabers decided to come to the Material Plane to protect this new race, the humans, help them hunt, keep them warm. Give them friendly company.
The humans and their new companions prospered. The Sabers hunted and kept watch. They used their magic to keep predators at bay and to link telepathically with their humans. In this way they could communicate. Eventually as is inevitable the humans learned greed. They began to covet what was not theirs and war soon broke out among tribes. The lives of many sabers and humans were lost.
The Sabers tried to keep their companions safe from themselves, but it was in vain. Disgusted and broken hearted, the Sabers left this world.
Millenia have passed since this time, and the humans have continued to war and destroy what is around them. The Sabers watch from the Etherial plane, and periodically one will come across and link with a human who is pure of heart, to be a companion and protector. These sabers keep themselves visible only to their companion, those other humans who have a companion saber and whosoever their companion chooses to show.
